  • Description

Jimmy Deignan’s Pennsy Middle Division model railroad is packed with both countless craftsman structure kits and a 20 year history. It came into being as a project railroad built by accomplished author and modeler Dave Frary, for a multi-part article that appeared in Model Railroader from 1992 to 1993. In the article series Dave documented thoroughly, the step-by-step process required to build the Pennsy. The layout went on to tour the train show circuit, where it took a few bumps and bangs along the way.

Years later, Jimmy found the layout for sale on Ebay. Wanting a layout of his own, he couldn’t resist purchasing it. Despite its years of wear and tear, Jimmy was up for the challenge. However, a motorcycle accident put his plans on hold for several years. Fortunately, with the help of some friends, including the railroad’s original builder, Dave Frary, the railroad was not only restored but expanded to be more operation friendly. The expansion also allowed for Jimmy to enjoy his favorite aspect of the hobby; craftsman structure kits. At present, the layout is home to over 120 kits by South River Model Works, Fine Scale Miniatures, Bar Mills Models, Fos Scale Models and many more.

The Pennsy features nearly all of the original eastern scenery in an autumn setting of rolling hills and country side. Its expanded scenes include almost twenty feet of waterfront scenery, packed with super detailed structures and boats. The DVD features a layout tour; a tree making demo by Hal Reynolds using his Turbo Tree; a scenery demo by Dave Frary, a water refinishing demo by Jimmy Deignan and a diorama installation by Doug Foscale.
